The MSP430 series from the manufacturer Texas Instruments is a 16-bit microcontroller with Neumann architecture (common address space for code and data). The microcontrollers distinguish for their low power consumption and are gaining popularity [1]. The selection of microcontrollers is huge. The prices can range from € 1.60 to € 10 and are mostly dependent on the peripherals, RAM and ROM memory and the number of microcontroller pins.

A highlight of the MSP430 series is the relatively new FRAM microcontrollers. FRAM technology has the advantage over conventional memory that it can be written as often as desired (10¹⁵ cycles), consumes less power, has improved resistance to radiation and electromagnetic fields, and flexibility [2].
